Iddy John — Kilimanjaro Expert & Summit Preparation Advisor

7× Mount Kilimanjaro Summiteer | Tanzania Tourism & Travel Expert | Kilimanjaro Preparation Advisor

I’m Iddy John, a Tanzanian travel and tourism entrepreneur, Mount Kilimanjaro expert, and seven-time Kilimanjaro summiteer. I have reached Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres) seven times and have firsthand experience of climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and experiencing the different conditions, challenges and preparation involved in a Kilimanjaro trek.

I created my Kilimanjaro Summit Advisor service to help travellers prepare for their climb with practical, firsthand information before they arrive in Tanzania.

Planning a Mount Kilimanjaro climb can be confusing. There are countless packing lists, equipment recommendations, route comparisons and opinions about altitude, acclimatization and summit night. My role is to help you separate useful information from unnecessary complexity and prepare for your trek with greater confidence.

Kilimanjaro Preparation From Someone Who Has Been There

Having summited Mount Kilimanjaro seven times, I understand that preparation is about much more than simply buying hiking boots and a warm jacket.

A good Kilimanjaro preparation plan should consider your route, trekking schedule, equipment, clothing, weather, altitude, acclimatization, daily trekking conditions and the realities of summit night.

In a one-on-one Kilimanjaro preparation consultation, I can help you review these areas and answer the questions that are difficult to resolve through generic online guides.

Kilimanjaro Gear & Packing Advice

Not sure what to pack for Mount Kilimanjaro?

I can review your planned equipment and help you understand what is essential, what may be unnecessary, and what could potentially be rented from your trekking operator.

This can include your:

  • Kilimanjaro clothing system
  • Hiking boots and footwear
  • Waterproof and warm layers
  • Backpack and daypack
  • Sleeping equipment
  • Trekking poles
  • Gloves, hats and other cold-weather equipment
  • Personal essentials
  • Overall Kilimanjaro packing list

The goal is to help you arrive prepared without carrying unnecessary equipment.

Kilimanjaro Route Advice

Mount Kilimanjaro has several established trekking routes, and choosing a route is an important part of planning your climb.

I can help you understand the practical differences between routes such as Machame, Lemosho, Rongai, Marangu and Umbwe, including the general character of each route and the factors you should consider when discussing your itinerary with a licensed trekking operator.

Preparing for Kilimanjaro Summit Night

Summit night on Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most demanding parts of the trek.

I help trekkers understand what to expect from the long summit push, including preparation for cold temperatures, clothing and equipment management, pacing, rest, hydration considerations and the mental challenge of spending many hours trekking toward Uhuru Peak.

The objective isn’t to make summit night sound easy. It is to make sure you know what you are preparing for.

Altitude & Acclimatization Guidance

Altitude is one of the most important considerations when preparing to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

I can explain the basic principles of Kilimanjaro altitude acclimatization in straightforward, practical terms and help you understand what questions to raise with your doctor before travelling.

I do not provide medical advice or prescribe medication. Decisions about altitude medication, fitness and medical suitability for high-altitude trekking should always be made with a qualified healthcare professional.

Understanding the Kilimanjaro Experience

Preparation also means knowing what life on the mountain can actually be like.

I can provide practical insight into areas such as:

  • Mountain camps and daily trekking
  • Working with guides and porters
  • Weather changes on Kilimanjaro
  • Food and camp routines
  • What summit day can feel like
  • Trekking etiquette
  • Porter and guide tipping practices
  • Questions to ask your trekking operator before departure

Why My Perspective Is Different

I am not a trekking operator trying to sell you a particular Kilimanjaro package, hotel or equipment rental.

My experience comes from firsthand Kilimanjaro climbs combined with years of working in Tanzania’s tourism industry.

I am the founder of Safari Wallet, a travel fintech platform focused on making travel more accessible and easier to plan for African travellers. Through my work in tourism, I have also worked with tourism businesses and service providers on areas including customer experience, tourism product development, digital transformation and service quality.

That experience gives me a broader understanding of the visitor journey — from preparing for a trip to Tanzania to experiencing tourism services on the ground.
